a good day to be named "edith"

apparently, when our president announces his choice to fill sandra day o'connor's supreme court seat tonight, edith clement is the likely candidate, and edith hollan jones is next in line. it's not as though i was expecting him to nominate gloria steinem, but come on - surely he doesn't think that just because, like o'connor, they're women and have names that were popular in the middle of the last century that i will overlook their hard right positions. i suppose it was overly optimistic of me to think he might consider someone like o'connor to replace her, someone who approaches the law with a lack of dogma.

it may be a good day for ediths, but it's a bad day for the rest of us.

Hmmm... according to reports, it's an even better day to be named John.

here's one quote of his, found in nearly every blurb:

"Roe v. Wade is the settled law of the land. ... There's nothing in my personal views that would prevent me from fully and faithfully applying that precedent."

on the other hand, from salon.com:

Arguing on behalf of the government for a roll back of abortion rights, Roberts has stated that there is "no support in the text, structure or history of the Constitution" for Roe v. Wade. Roberts wrote the government's brief in Rust v. Sullivan, the 1991 case in which the Supreme Court held that government could prohibit doctors and clinics who receive federal funds from discussing abortion with their patients. In his brief, Roberts said: "We continue to believe that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and should be overruled."

right, and that comment tagged on to the brief was thoroughly inappropriate since the case was about the "gag rule" and not dealing with a womyn's right to choose.

operation rescue, priests for life, and other major anti-choice organizations came out in staunch support of the nomination an hour after it was announced. coincidence? ummm...nope.

plus he's mean to 12 year old french fry eating girls and believes they should be cuffed and held in jail for hours when an adult would only receive a paper citation for the same offense. that would be funny if it didn't terrify me so.

i've been reading way to much of what little paper trail there is and its enough to scare the crap outta me.
